The Student Services focus for this week is Rest, Recharge & Reflection: Preparing for a Successful New Year.
As the semester comes to a close and we head into the holiday break, it is the perfect time for students to step back from the academic grind. Taking intentional time to rest, recharge, and reflect is not just a break—it's a critical way to reset the body's stress response and prepare for the semester ahead.
The Three R’s for a Healthy Break
Encourage your student to practice these habits to return in January feeling refreshed and ready:
1. Rest Your Mind and Body: The academic semester can lead to burnout and chronic sleep deprivation. Encourage your student to prioritize 8 to 9 hours of quality sleep each night and to establish a "digital sunset" by unplugging from screens for a few hours daily to reduce overstimulation.
2. Recharge Your Spirit: Recharging is about doing more of what restores you. Whether it’s revisiting an old hobby, spending time outdoors in nature, or simply enjoying a book for pleasure, these activities can reduce stress by up to 68% and help students regain their natural curiosity and motivation.
3. Reflect on the Journey: Reflection helps turn past experiences into future growth. Encourage your student to think about the past semester using simple prompts:
- Rose: What is one success or achievement you are proud of?
- Thorn: What was a significant challenge you faced?
- Bud: What is one goal or new habit you want to start next semester?
Taking this time to get organized and set realistic intentions will help your student start the new year with a clear mind and a sense of purpose.
